Zhangjiagang Port

 

The Port of Zhangjiagang, the largest river port in China, is an important hub of communication for navigation to the sea through the Yangtze River water channel and a newly developed port for international trade as well. With deep water close to the bank,  with Shuangshan Island as the natural protective screen, the Port of Zhangjiagang is a non-frozen and non-silting port that is able to handle cargoes even in the event of grade 8 stormy wave. At present there are twenty 10,000-ton wharfs, 15 float berths in the port area to accommodate 35 vessels of 10,000 ton-class at the same time. 12 international shipping lines, 7 international container shipping lines from the port have been established. The port boasts trade shipping relations with more than 140 ports in 40 countries and regions in the world and its handling capacity has exceeded  100 million tons per annum in 2006.
It is also one of the knitted apparel production centers in China with well developed industrial chains. terminals on river bank

Position: Located in the lower reaches of Yangtze River,130 KM west of Shanghai on the southern bank of the Yangtse River.
Channel: Depth: 10 meters
Temperature: Annual average 15.2°, the highest temperature is 38°C and the lowest is - 4.2°C.
Wind: Wind direction more from the southeast, average speed 3.8 meters per second
Precipitation Annual precipitation is 1000 mm and nearly half falls from July to September.
Ice: Ice-free-port
Fog: Annual average 28.7 days.
Hydrology: Tideway of Yangtze river, raise and neap tide changes every half day irregularly with water level rising of 6.69 meters in the highest and 0.74 meters in the lowest, tide difference is 3.19 meters, rising tide speed 0.32 meters per second, ebb tide speed 0.48 meters per second.
Hinterland: The hinterland of the port covers three important cities of Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou.
Annual Throughput: 100 million metric tons min.
       

Merging into Suzhou Port in 2002

   
In the year of 2002, the three ports of Zhangjiagang, Changshu and Kunshan were merged into one large international port - Suzhou Port.
 
According to the Overall Planning of Suzhou Port, Jiangsu Province intends to make Suzhou Port an important part of Shanghai International Shipping Center as well as the no. 1 foreign trade port of Jiangsu via unified resource reconsolidation. The Planning has stipulated specific functions of individual ports. 
 
Zhangjiagang Port is a multifunctional international trade harbor servicing for the opening up of Zhangjiagang City and industries in the cities along the Yangtze River. Designed to handle timber, steel materials, metals & ores, liquefied oil and petrochemicals plus cereals and oils, Port of Zhangjiagang will provide foreign trade shipping services for hinterland areas and material transit around middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
